“I still can’t believe I let you talk me into this.” Taking in the array of junk food currently covering her dining room table, Edie shook her head.

“The way I remember it, I didn’t really have to talk you into anything,” Carly teased, carefully positioning another bag of chips at the front of the pile. “In fact, I’m pretty sure your exact words were, ‘If y’all have a slumber party without me, I’m never speaking to any of you again’.”

“I was obviously out of my mind. Delirious. Heat exhaustion, I bet that’s what it was.”

“Uh huh. Or…” Rounding the table, Carly slipped an arm around Edie’s waist and tipped her head to the side to let it rest on her friend’s shoulder. “Maybe you just like having us around.”

“Maybe.” Edie still didn’t sound convinced, which had Carly fighting the urge to laugh.

“Would a drink help cheer you up? We have plenty to choose from.”

“I still can’t believe Matty let you get all this. That boy has a soft spot for you.”

Truth be told, Carly couldn’t quite believe it herself. He’d been very firm during their drive to the grocery store about how much she was allowed to buy, and he’d followed it all up with a lecture about eating ‘real food’ and not giving herself a tummy ache with too much junk food and alcohol.

All of that had gradually gone out the window as they’d shopped. Every time she showed the least bit of excitement over something, into the cart it went. Even things she hadn’t actually wanted, he’d tried to add to their overflowing pile just because he caught her looking at it too long.

By the time they’d checked out, there had been enough chips and cookies and snack cakes and ice cream in the back of his truck to feed half of Lost River for a week. Thank god she had plenty of money in her savings account, plus what she’d saved the past two weeks between staying with Edie and Matt paying for most of her meals. He’d tried to pay for her groceries, but she’d managed to put her foot down about it, even if she had gotten a bit of an attitude and earned herself a quick, hard spanking in the cab of his truck before they’d finally headed back to Edie’s house. It had been worth the brief punishment to feel like she was contributing something and helping out her friends.

Even now, she could feel the warmth of it trapped by her leggings.
